What is the best charging method for my EV?
A standard 3-pin plug can be used to charge an EV, but this is the slowest method and is not recommended as your permanent charging method for safety reasons. A dedicated charger is the safest, quickest and smartest solution.
A dedicated home chargepoint allows you to fully charge most cars at the cheapest rate possible. You can manage that remotely via the charge points dedicated app (no need to nip out at midnight in the cold and rain to plug in especially).
ChargedEV includes an additional Surge Protection Device (SPD) as part of every install to ensure the safest and most compliant solution possible.
How long will an installation take?
A standard installation will take between 2 -3 hours with more complexity adding to that time. We will let you know approximately how long your own installation will be ahead of the install date.
Do I need a chargepoint with a tethered (fixed) cable or without (a socketed unit with a plug for a separate cable)?
This depends on a number of factors, price, convenience, and what it looks like.
Tethered units will cost a little extra as they have a fixed cable included, this will need to be hooked in place when not in use (much like your garden hose), some people love the convenience factor (ie: they do not have to get a cable out every time they need to charge or when it’s raining) some will choose a cleaner simpler look for their home chargepoint and instead choose a socketed version that they simply plug in the cable they received with their vehicle – sure it means opening the boot a bit more often – but if you are charging once or twice a week it’s not a big hassle for most people.
What is the difference between AC & DC charging?
AC chargers are the most common type of charger for places where vehicles are parked for long periods of time – they are ideal for homes and businesses.
DC chargers convert electricity from AC to DC before it reaches your car, which allows them to achieve much higher outputs – these are much more expensive to supply, install and run and will typically be seen at Motorway service stations where you would need to charge quickly and get on your way.
Can my home charger integrate with solar panels or battery storage?
ChargedEV install a wide variety of charge points so if you need one that integrates with other technology – please let us know.
If you are thinking about having solar installed at a later date this is a function worth considering – of course – let us know as we are installers of Solar and Battery for homes so we may be able to install all of those for you.
Will I need to upgrade my electrical panel / fuse board?
No – ChargedEV will install an additional consumer unit especially for your EV chargepoint.
If there is additional work required to your fuse board or home electrics we will advise you so you can organise that separately.
What Charging Speed Should I Choose?
UK homes are traditionally on what is called a single phased supply – this means a 7.4kw chargepoint will be the fastest you can get – this will charge most cars in 4-6 hours – typically at the cheapest electricity rate and while you’re tucked up in bed.
The time it takes to charge an EV depends on the charger’s capacity and the size of the EV’s battery. The most common home charging speed is 7.4 kilowatts (kWh), which is about the maximum that most home grids can handle.
Some homes have the luxury of a 3 phase supply – this means they can potentially charge 3 times faster than a normal home chargepoint – we will identify if this applies to you and will begin to plan a slightly more complex installation for you.
Does my smart meter need to be fitted before the charger?
You don’t need to have a smart meter installed before you have your ev charger installer, and having it installed afterwards shouldn’t affect anything either. You can still use your EV charger without one.
It is beneficial to have it installed, especially if you are looking to utilise an EV specific energy tariff with your chosen energy provider.
How can I be sure an installation is safe?
All ChargedEV installers are time served qualified electricians. Our installers meet the very latest in EV accreditations ensuring that all installations are safe and compliant.
