North Tyneside Council Case Study

We electrified North Tyneside Council’s site to coincide with their solar carport, for use by their fleet, company car drivers and visitors.

The Client - North Tyneside Council

North Tyneside Council is a Local Authority that covers all the services you would expect including Social Care, Housing, Construction, Leisure and Environmental Services. They have been electrifying their fleet over the last years which includes over 300 vehicles, ranging from small vans to 26 tonne refuse vehicles, as well as their staff members driving electric.

Looking to transition their whole fleet in the next 3 years, they turned to ChargedEV to complete their infrastructure, providing 66 22kW units across their sites coupled with Chargeasy back office management.

The Requirement

North Tyneside Council’s goal was to create an Electric Vehicle Hub that integrated with a solar car port and battery storage system. The infrastructure would be used to charge the council’s electric vans, fleet vehicles and personal vehicles, utilising a suitable back office management system to create a network to charge different prices to different users, at different times of the day.

The electrical infrastructure in place, installed in the 1960’s provided it’s own challenges to work with; alongside large sub mains being installed, met with long underground cable routes with large supply cables.

As is every installation, health and safety was critical on a busy council depot. This was doubled up by parking constraints allowing for a phased plan to be built to suit the client and keep efficiency high.

The Solution

Our in-house design engineers built and designed the technical solution, with thorough and precise RAMS and plans of works implemented to ensure a phased, efficient installation.

To enable the client to manage their tariffs seamlessly, we implemented a custom branded QR solution for all drivers, as well as RFID cars for fleet vehicles.

We provided 66 22kW units across their sites coupled with Chargeasy back office management.

North Tyneside Council’s solution, as of February 2024, has delivered 3600 charging sessions for over 110 unique drivers. Utilising the infrastructure, and managing it through Chargeasy, they have delivered over 70,500kWh of energy; charging up over 206,500 electric miles.

Ian Lillie, Strategic Facilities Manager at North Tyneside Council said:

“The EV infrastructure, which now has up to 100 staff and fleet users, has made a massive difference to our staff and how we charge our fleet vehicles and will be a simple and effective scalable model going forward. We were looking for simplicity and reliability and I can confirm these have both been achieved by the install.

What appealed to us about ChargedEV and their products was the cost, functionality and reliability – we have found the solution to be beyond expectations and has been very well received by both staff and fleet users. The installation team were great and kept us fully informed throughout, they have also been very responsive to the few issues we have had following install.

The process from start to finish was painless and efficient. I would and indeed have thoroughly recommended ChargedEV to colleagues and other public bodies; great service and great solution.”
